Bring your schedule, find your classrooms, meet your teachers, practice your route, and work your locker before the first day of school.

• Find every classroom on your schedule.
• Meet your teachers.
• Practice walking your schedule in order.
• Find the office, library, cafeteria, and restrooms.
• Open and practice using your locker.

A strong start begins before day one

A little preparation can make the first week feel much easier.

The week before school

• ✓Return to a regular sleep schedule.
• ✓Get enough rest to stay alert through the school day.
• ✓Gather notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, and requested supplies.
• ✓Choose one place at home to keep school materials organized.
• ✓Review your class schedule and room numbers.
• ✓Know how you will get to and from school.
• ✓Plan to eat breakfast before classes begin.
• ✓Set an alarm with enough time to get ready without rushing.
• ✓Keep important school and family contact information easy to find.
• ✓Pack your backpack the night before the first day.

You do not need the fanciest supplies or a perfect system. You need a few dependable tools, a place to keep them, and a plan you can actually follow.

Success is mostly built from small habits

You do not have to become a perfect student overnight. Start with a few habits and repeat them until they become normal.

Use one planner or calendar.

Write assignments, tests, practices, and deadlines in one dependable place.

Check your grades regularly.

Do not wait until the end of the nine weeks to discover missing work.

Start before the night before.

Break projects and studying into smaller pieces that are easier to finish.

Review a little every day.

A few minutes of regular review usually works better than one long cram session.

Read the directions completely.

Many lost points come from skipping part of an assignment.

Put distractions away.

Move your phone out of reach when you need to focus.

Find a study spot that works.

It does not have to be silent, but it should help you stay on task.

Keep class materials organized.

Use separate folders, notebook sections, or files for each class.

Make up missed work quickly.

Being absent does not make assignments disappear. Find out what you missed.

Use teacher feedback.

Corrections show you what to do differently next time.

Attend school consistently.

It is much easier to keep up than to catch up.

Ask questions.

Questions are part of learning—not proof that you are failing.

Ask for help early

You are not bothering a teacher by asking for help. Speak to your teacher before or after class, ask when a good time would be to meet, or send a respectful message.

• Ask as soon as you realize you are confused.
• Bring the assignment or question with you.
• Explain what you have already tried.
• Do not wait until several assignments are missing.
• Asking for help early is a sign that you are taking responsibility.

Find your people

High school is better when you get involved. You do not have to join everything—try one activity that matches something you already enjoy or lets you try something completely new.

Athletics

Compete, train, improve, and be part of a team.

Speech & Debate

Build confidence, communication skills, and competitive experience.

Spanish Club

Explore language, culture, activities, and new friendships.

Class Officers

Represent your class and help plan class activities.

Student Council

Serve the school and help shape student life.

Bible Study

Connect through faith, discussion, and encouragement.

Leadership Council

Build leadership skills and contribute to school projects.

Perform, grow as a vocalist, and make music with others.

Your first-week game plan

The first few days may feel unfamiliar. That does not mean you are doing anything wrong. By the end of the first week, the hallways, schedule, and routines will already feel more normal.

• 1Arrive early enough that you are not rushing.
• 2Bring your schedule and keep it easy to reach.
• 3Introduce yourself to your teachers.
• 4Write down every assignment and deadline.
• 5Learn one new person’s name.
• 6Ask for help finding a room or opening your locker.
• 7Try one club, team, or activity.
• 8Give yourself time to adjust.

You are ready to begin.

You do not need to enter high school knowing everything. Come prepared to learn, be willing to ask for help, and look for a place to get involved. Your teachers, counselors, coaches, sponsors, and classmates are here to help you build a strong freshman year.
